Nelson's proclamation
In 1994, when Nelson Mandela became the President of Africa, he proclaimed that the families in Langa owned their homes and never more would have to pay rent to the government. This has resulted in many of the homes in Langa being improved as residents now take pride in owning their home and taking care of their township and one another! On the other side of the "tracks", literally, is the colored / non-white section of town called Bountyville. Before Mandela was elected, the residents of Langa could see how the other half lived across the tracks but were outlawed from entering Bountyville! This neighborhood has sidewalks, satellites, swimming pools and a large community center and technical college funded by Bill Gates.
